Illustration of student bounding to success with the help of student support

At Ulster University we offer an exceptional level of student support across all aspects of academic life, including for our online students.

One of the unique support services we offer is a dedicated team of Student Success Advisors, on hand to provide additional support and pastoral care to students from enrolment right through to graduation.

You can talk to your Advisor whenever it is convenient for you, receiving information and guidance on study schedules, deadlines, fees, welfare issues and more.

Read on for feedback from current Ulster Online students and an interview with one of our valued Advisors.

What our students are saying

Our students frequently express high satisfaction for the comprehensive student support services offered to them throughout their studies.

“I have monthly calls with my student success advisor and continue to find these meetings invaluable. They have helped me adjust to the online learning environment, manage my time better and prepare for upcoming assignments.

They are structured in such a way that I have time to reflect on the course content, in addition to my physical and mental well-being. I have been encouraged to seek out additional support and been signposted to other student services at Ulster when needed.”

– Oteri Kueberuwa, an online MSc Health Psychology student at Ulster

Get to know our Student Success Team

Meet Matt, one of our valued Student Success Advisors. In our Q&A below, you’ll gain insight into his role and find out how his team can help support you on your learning journey.

Please tell us a little bit more about your role.

Your Student Success Advisor for Ulster Online student support, Matt headshotI am a Student Success Advisor within the Student Success Team at Ulster University. The key phrase to describe my role is ‘pastoral support’, which covers things like student progression as well as their welfare on the course.

My role entails supporting and coaching online Masters students as well as being the first point of contact for any inbound queries.

What are the main responsibilities of the Student Success Team?

My main responsibilities include onboarding new students to ensure a smooth and seamless start to the course and proactively reaching out to students to coach them through their MSc.

I also ensure that they are achieving their goals and that they are on track with their progression plan by providing support with the Virtual Learning Environment, signposting to any specialist services the University offers and being the main point of contact for any questions.

“The best thing about being a Student Success Advisor is building strong relationships with my students from all over the world, from all different backgrounds, and getting to watch them grow in confidence and achieve their goals as they progress through the course.”

How can the Student Success Team support online students?

The Student Success Team can support by giving a human touch to an online course. We are there predominantly to make sure the students’ time here is as successful as possible and that they achieve all their goals. We are the first point of contact to provide support with any questions or queries, and we are also there for a friendly chat.

What are some of the main benefits of studying online?

Studying online gives students the opportunity to pursue their passion and interests whilst simultaneously giving them the flexibility to study around their work and other commitments. Furthermore, as studying online is more self-directed, it develops and improves a variety of skills – time management, for example – more quickly compared with traditional on-campus study.

What’s the most rewarding thing about working with Ulster University students?

The most rewarding thing about working with Ulster University students is supporting students who may feel a bit nervous or anxious at the start of their student journey. With regular calls and coaching- however, they increase in confidence to the point where their feelings of uncertainty have dissipated and they thrive on the course.

What’s the best thing about being a Student Success Advisor?

The best thing about being a Student Success Advisor is building strong relationships with my students from all over the world, from all different backgrounds, and getting to watch them grow in confidence and achieve their goals as they progress through the course.
